The BlessingWay is an ancient ceremony passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter, to prepare the body, mind, spirit and soul for the deep, amazing passage of birth and mothering. It is a blessing, an honoring of the mama, baby and motherhood, which creates essential community support for the birth journey.

Francene Carls has created ceremony for 29 years in Santa Cruz county. She teaches soul-focused classes and conducts BlessingWays, Rites of Passage for maidens, Weddings, and Memorials. Her teachers are Starhawk and Dr. Estés, author of Women Who Run With the Wolves.

  1. Francene officiated my blessing way and it was the most important rite-of-passage that I’ve had. Mothers-to-be have one foot in the way we’re used to living life, while one foot is stepping forward. We are preparing for labor, accepting responsibility for another persons’ life and most importantly, anticipating a love like no other. It is so necessary to acknowledge this passage, and the blessing way that was held in my honor by Francene with a beautiful circle of women will never be forgotten by me.

Francene created and performed my blessingway and it was perfect in every way. Intimate and deeply touching. I felt open, supported and celebrated. She held space for my process while effortlessly keeping the ritual moving forward. We laughed, we cried… and Ari loves all of his blessingway beads!

I have experienced Francene’s mastery of the blessing way. She led us into the magical dimensions of the transformation of a woman into a mother. She is incomparable. After this memorable time, neither the mother-to-be or those fortunate enough to be participants in Francene's ritual will ever be the same.
